A job application also known as a application for employment, is your opportunity to present yourself to a potential employer and show why you are the best candidate for the job. Employers receive a lot of job applications, so you have to get to the point quickly, otherwise you end up in the pile of those who don’t get to come to an interview. An interview is the very goal of a job application.

Below you will find seven tips that can make your job application better:

1. Follow the instructions: Be sure to read the job advertisement carefully and follow any instructions given. This may include specific formatting or content requirements.

2. Tailor your application to the job: Tailor your application to the specific job you are applying for. Use the job advertisement and job description as a guide to highlight your relevant skills, experience and achievements.

3. Use a clear, professional layout: Use headings and organize your information so that it is easy for the reader to understand what you are promoting and why you are a relevant and current job seeker to bring in for an interview.

4. Use action verbs: Use strong, active verbs to describe your responsibilities and achievements. Some of these may be, for example, “developed”, “implemented” or “administered”.

5. Include specific examples: Instead of just listing your responsibilities and duties, give specific examples of the work you’ve done and the results you’ve achieved, preferably in light of how this can in turn be useful to the employer you’re applying to .

6. Proofreading: Be sure to proofread your application for spelling and grammar errors. An application with errors can make a bad impression on potential employers. Feel free to get a friend or someone you trust to go over the job application. Perhaps you will get tips on reformulating things or removing them from the application altogether.

By following these tips, you can create a strong, effective job application that will help you stand out from the many applicants for the same position. But before you get to an interview, a potential employer will be happy to see your CV, we give you seven more tips on how to create a good CV.
